Power supply: Buhari gives directive for mass metering to end estimated billing

President Muhammed Buhari has ordered mass metering nationwide in a bid to stop estimated and arbitrary billing for electricity.

According to the chairman of the Nigerian electricity regulatory commission(NERC), James Momoh, the president's directive was in response to the requests of Nigerians.

He said the president also approved a waiver of the import levy on metres. He encouraged the public and all stakeholders in the power sector to neglect reports of an arbitrary tariff increase affecting Nigerians.

Mr Momoh explained that tariff demands would be service based.

"Under these service based principles, Distribution companies(DISCOs) will only be able to review tariff rates for customers when they consult with customers, commit to increasing the number of hours of supply per day and quality of services.
